He had voted for capital punishment years earlier. He was terrified to discover subsequently numerous individuals on death row were actually innocent. This troubles him daily and nightly. For he was so certain his capital punishment vote was correct, only to discover that his conscience now denies him peace of mind and sleep. It is one thing to say I am for a war, another to be the one who votes for it, and must live with its moral consequences.

However, since they do not vote, the conservatives gain political power. Every political scientist knows republicans vote 18% more often than democrats. What man comes to fear in his mind or reality, he eventually comes to hate. It represents a perceived threatening intimidation, to his well-being or self –preservation. Hatred, the child of fear and ignorance of the unknown; propels the individual to believe and act --- birthing in evil. "My First Night Basic Training-The Day of My Discharge"
MY FIRST NIGHT
BASIC TRAINING:
I can remember as if it was yesterday, the long bus ride which terminated at my Basic Training post. It was early in the morning when it seemed like 100s of buses simultaneously converged at the base. Everyone was screamed at to disembark by the sergeants. I was standing next to an elderly African-American sergeant ---a top kick--- turned out to be a sergeant major --- Army lifer. I looked at the individuals exiting the buses and said to him,"Hey what are all these kids doing here? Where are the army recruits? I mean, where are the army guys? You know, the soldiers.? I was drafted out of law school, about 23, but these kids were all 18 or less. The sergeant turned to me with an angry but hurtful face, responded,"Where have you been man. This is the Army. The kids are the Army recruits the soldiers. Don't you know, Stupid, we kill our children. Now shut up and get you ass inline!" It was at that moment my life changed. I began my transition from being a right wing conservative to a liberal?
THE DAY OF MY DISCHARGE:
I never believed evil existed, until a clean cut mid-western young man, bragged of having shot out the eyes of a Vietnamese baby in a rice field. Because someone else had used the baby's mother for target practiced. In such moments, lives change.
I arrived home following military service, however, my complete beliefs-system had somehow changed. I was no war hero. However, vanished were the days of a self-interested selfish man enthusiastically devoted to one objective ---MAKING MONEY, and then AGGREGATING a hell of a bundle MORE.! I WAS NO LONGER THE Donald Trump I had dreamed to be. In private, I fell to my knees and prayed to The Father that in my lifetime there would not be another war. History demonstrated my entreaty was not granted.
What had altered me so profoundly? I was a elderly draftee in my middle twenties. Approximately 40% of our law school class was drafted. Disconcertingly, only five returned. However, what really changed my outlook were military service’s little things. For instance, how the black drill-instructors, (sergeants-the backbone of the Army) fervently train us white kids when our ancestors (and some continuing present idiots) enslaved and persecute them. How could they forgive us? Why were they so devoted to educate us in the art of combat survival.
The second thing most exceptional was our Company’s second in command. Everyone from the brigade colonel on down continually praised him. He was what they used to describe"a 90 wonder.". A twenty-year-old kid, without education, nevertheless, with steadfast perseverance and force of willpower became an officer. As well, I was proud of him. He triumphed over the odds from an impecunious upbringing to improve himself and his family’s fortunes.
However, when he received his order to report directly to"Nam"–a disheartening mind-set permeated the Company. We got together, let military disciple slack a bit, and threw a farewell party for him. At its conclusion, surprisingly, the young lieutenant approached me, saying,"You know I have been especially rough on you, but only to set an example for all the 18-19 year old kids. That we were not going to lighten-up even on some older guy like you; especially, since they look up to you." He continued,"But, don’t think it was personal. Well, (he stammered) I wanted you to know I also respect you."
Then there was a silence. The kind which happens between men who are trying to tell each other they spiritually love each other - without appearing as if to make a homosexual pass. He kept on staring intently into my eyes. I will never forget those haunting eyes. They were soliciting reassurance from me. That everything was going to be all right in Nam. That he was going to survive even during the war’s most heated combat periods. I was speechless. Call it an instinct. Nevertheless, a deep feeling of apprehension plagued me. Things were not to go well for him. We lingered some time making small talk, and finally I lied,"Hey, Brother, don’t worry everything is going to be all right." He was relieved. I had reassured him. The next morning to hails and good wishes. He departed. I never saw him again. Against my better judgment, I subsequently checked with the Army regarding his discharge status. It is understatement to say I was devastated when informed he had perished in combat. For years, I had nightmares; his eyes haunted my terrifying dreams. I still do. War is like tar, it sticks to you, something you can’t purge yourself from, never fully leave behind.
Many years later, I was a college professor, teaching a political science course, when the Gulf War started. I never permitted my private sentiments to permeate any lecture. In fact, all my students accused me of being a conservative right-winger. I’m a liberal for Heaven’s sakes. Class discussions about the pending war were heated. I opposed it, stating," I predict, and if I am wrong will take you all out for Pizza, that in the war’s first month, there will be at least 47,000 casualties. Everyone laughed disagreeing.
Some time later, one student arose to announce his reserve unit was called-up for combat service. I immediately declared, with thinking,"You are not going! We will find you a way out of this. Better jail than being killed or having you body parts shot off." Silence overwhelmed the class. Who was I to notify this young man not to do his service to his country- his duty? I caught myself. I explained people did not comprehend how horrifying war was; and, and especially its aftermath. How you could never leave it behind you. It troubled you every day because you had traversed the line set by what we describe as civilization. Quoting a philosopher"When you become a soldier, you take a step backward, away from civilization, back to the primeval darkness of the State of Nature." By which he meant the Law of the Jungle—not the reasoned rule of civilized law. My students solicited a more elaborate explanation. I responded"Look at it from this perspective. We are born brought up to believe we are good people. That we condemn and would never accept anything unethical, criminal, or evil. We are acculturated, taught to love our country, with the highest ideals, and rightly so.
Nevertheless, war alters everything. In war, you ascertain the accurate realism concerning life. That the nation which taught you to be decent and good, at present requires you to murder strangers in a faraway country of which you heard little if anything. They now are declared"THE ENEMY" And you, under sanction of law, imprisonment) must murder their young children relatively your age. All in the name of some trumped up vague, nebulous, ill-defined political rhetoric. No. I am not a communist and have no sympathy for a system, which tyrannized its populace. Nevertheless, I am a human being, mandated to peel back that thin veneer called civilization and become a soldier---a person who is to kill another human being– a stranger- for imprecise reasons.
The class had a party for our departing serviceman. Reminiscent of my Army days, afterwards, the young gentleman approached me for a final farewell. He stared at me with those eyes. It was deju vu all over again. The eyes were beseeching reassurance. My instincts again told me different, however, I placed my hand on his shoulder saying,"Don’t worry Son, Everything will be all right." This comforted him. Some time later, I had forgotten about the wager with my class, when I walked in the lecture hall, they began to yell,"You were wrong! You were wrong! You were wrong! There were not 47,000 casualties so far in the war as you predicted. So, pay up doc!" I responded,"In one-way you are correct; there have been negligible American casualties. However, there have been more than 47,000 Iraqi civilian casualties. You know, even Iraqi women and children casualties are human beings."
In any event, we had our party. We said a prayer for our comrade in the Gulf. The subject was never again mentioned in class.
Then for many years, I kept checking the ac matriculation list. My student had not returned to his studies Finally, as the years passed, I made another dreadful mistake. For a second time, I contacted US Army regarding his discharge status. Once again to hear the demoralizing words,"Killed in action."
How could it be with so minor US casualties, that my student was slain? Well, you never think it is going to happen to you and yours; until it does. War truly is Hell. No joke. Nothing to be tinkered with. I pray the President, the Congress and the American people remember this while deciding their position in the Iraq debate. The devil Saddam merits the loathing he receives, but the Iraqi people will suffer the bloody ghastly consequences. And, our decision will linger on our consciences for the spiritual accounting on Judgment Day.

MY UNCLE LAWRENCE-EUGENE:
He was an ordinary, shy, quiet childless man, without many interests; except working in his woodshop making hundreds of wooden toys. Annually at Christmas time, he would anonymously deliver them to orphanages. Nevertheless, behind that quiet exterior, there resided a resolute man of action, relentless determination, and a believer in the highest ethics. He volunteered to be in the first Normandy wave on D-Day. His nickname was "Front-Line Larry." Was wounded seven (yes 7) times during WW II. Remarking about the silver plate in his head, "Well, it's better than being able to open and close your skull like a trap door." After each wounding, he would vociferously refuse to be repatriated, recover, re-enlist, stating, "No one is sending me home until the job is done, and that law-hater, anti-democratic Hitler devil is dead." Around April 30, 1945, he heard "that coward Hitler committed suicide" (and after visiting some of the concentration camps) he threw down his rifle before his commanding officer and began exiting his Company. The commander asked him where he was going. He simply replied "Home." "But, you can't do that, you have to be discharged." Uncle Lawrence Eugene paid no heed, just kept walking toward England, got on a ship and came home.
Years later on his death-bed in Intensive Care, a young resident approached him stating, in effect, Uncle LawrenceEugene should accept the inevitable, stop wasting health care resources, and have his respirator unplugged. Besides, the hospital needed the Intensive Care bed for others with a better chance of survival. Uncle LawrenceEugene quietly stated to his wife and the young resident, "Son, I paid, in blood and guts, for every breath I get off this machine. Honey, if this Boy tries to unplug this thing, don't stop him, don't call the police---simply go home and get my rifle." The young resident fled the room in terror. Uncle LawrenceEugene survived. He enjoyed another seven years, everyday just making those wooden Christmas toys.
You see, Uncle LawrenceEugene was no intellectual---no flag-waiving patriot, never talked about his war exploits. However, he believed in America based upon the rule of law----and the Constitutional Liberties it represented.

The question: If this is true, then should the Administration have grounded all US airlines planes---as a precautionary safeguard??? Was it negligent???
