"WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE?"

In every college course, I would inquire this concluding question to my students. The consensus seemed to be this: to love and be loved in return. But, what is love? There are many types and characterizations.

There is passionate romantic love equated with the emotions sex. This love is part of our human animal temperament. The desire for sexual gratification is a normal lifetime necessity. God’s first commandment was: “You are to have sexual relations. Be fruitful and multiply.” However, it does not seen to be a permanent love form. . To say, this is love, seems inadequate. Then, there is the conditional provisional love form. In Latin, “Quid Pro Quo.” Translated meaning: this for that. In reality, it is love based on a deal, contract or bargain. If you will do this for me, then I will do that for you. You scratch my back, and I will scratch your back. However, if you do not meet my expectations by completing your part of the deal, then I will not fulfill my. Is this really love? Or is it merely, a business transaction between people. Does it really have any true spiritual, ethical value? Unhappily, many marriages are predicated upon this love pact. The man marries a woman because she is attractive and he needs his sexual desires fulfilled. The woman marries the man for security—which means for his wealth or his ability to produce revenue to maintain her children—someone to pay the bills. Is this true love? Or is it merely a contractual arrangement between two people who don’t really love each other. The problem is this. Eventually, one or both of the party’s breaches anticipation in the conditional love relationship. Failing to meet the other’s expectations almost immediately results in resentment, invariable antagonism, heated quarrels- divorce with the children the true victims. This is probably why the United States has a 50 percent divorce rate.

Obviously, for love to be real, it must be unconditional. (Aristotle) Only when oneÂ’s love is for the other, just for being themselves, and not expectations of anything in return—even being loved in return—only then can love endure life’s adversities.

UNCLE'S/GODFATHER'S DISCUSSION WITH A NIECE


Hi Sweetie, Flying-off-the-handle in anger is what life’s unsuccessful bitter people do. Adamantly insisting they’re 100% correct, even to the point of demolishing loving relationships. Being triumphant in the disagreement escalates becoming more important than the other person. They assume inflexible positions refusing to give halfway--- not attempting to discover the middle ground of compromise - reconciliation - the re-establishment of peace, harmony and love. This preliminary form of rage--- is unjustifiable antagonism inadequate to resolve problems. It forsakes rational debate generating passionate emotions, which only momentary release our repressed frustrations and stress. The built-up anger we all acquire in this hectic existence. Regrettably, this ranting and raving can develop into a “LIFELONG TEMPER” which culminates in unhappiness; even tragedy. Worse yet, at times it produces discord, which, because of pride, can’t be resolved. You may win the argument but lose a friend. So, Sweetie, don’t do this. Don’t stumble into that trap. Or, at least be aware of it, and discover other ways to articulate your rationale in the dispute. Am I guilty of the same? Yes. But, remember what I taught you, I always try to eventually correct myself, express regret, forgive and try to forget (endeavor to be converted into an improved person) and to start over anew. That’s what Jesus wanted us to do. It’s easier to hate than to love. To love we must forgive 7 times 7 times 7; otherwise Paradise will not be ours. For we are forgiven only as much as we forgive others.

You are about to transition through numerous metabolic, emotional and psychological teenage changes. As you articulate your own independence, you will differ more and more with adults. That’s good. You are developing into your own person---discovering who you are; not what adults tell you you are, or what they want you to be. Adults will grow to be less significant in your life. Your peers and friends will give the impression of having all the solutions. But, they will be just as perplexed, as they transform through being (one of those creatures I warned you about) ---a “teenager.” Nevertheless, you will grow out of it, as you become you, as you decide your individual decisions independent of everyone. That’s called becoming a mature adult. Or, autonomy as Immanuel Kant called it. Those who don’t mature remain life’s “stunted children in adult bodies.” How do I know these things, I was there, I made the same mistakes! I love you and forgive you about our disagreement. Material objects mean nothing. They can be replaced. But you can’t restore a love lost; no price can be placed on a loved one. Please, learn from my and our mistakes; strive to be better than the rest of us. You have the greatest future ahead of you. WHAT DID JESUS MEAN BY SPIRITUAL LOVE?

There exists a superior magnanimous altruistic love. The sort of love Jesus professed and lived- when he offered his life for the deliverance of mankind. The type of love a soldier demonstrates to his comrades by falling on the grenade destined to exterminate them. That is, those heroes, who surrender their own life for another. “No greater love has a man, then when he lays down his life for his fellowman.” (Jesus Christ) And, is that not precisely what Jesus Christ executed for his fellow human beings. He gave away his life in order that all mankind would be redeemed, liberated, emancipated? Permitted, once again, to return home to The Father to dwell in Paradise - in perpetual eternal happiness. For just as Abraham willingly would have sacrificed his son, so to The Father sacrificed his son on Calvary.

There are three, not two, commandments of spiritual love.

No. 1. The first commandment: “You must love the Lord your God with everything, your complete my soul mind and strength.

No. 2. The second commandments: “And, you must love your fellow human being, as much as, you love yourself.” All the other commandments are condensed into these two. However these are orders, not requests, commands! They mean we do not enjoy an option in the question; we are obliged to love God and our fellowman. Conversely, we are not permitted for any cause to hate our fellowman. To me, these commandments represent this: all the excellent things and blessings I desire, I should similarly desire the equivalent for all other human being, friend or antagonist. Yes, I am even to love my adversarial enemy. One who has done wrong, malevolence or evil to myself? Yes, I must wish for my enemies uppermost good, despite my resentment. I must forgive my enemy; exonerate him, even though he does not request it. If I do not forgive; neither then will I be absolved? However, this does not mean I must be a masochistic mat, allowing my enemy to maltreat me- without confronting him with his evil towards me. When Jesus stated we must turn the other cheek, he was referring to not meeting violence with violence. He was proclaiming the extinction of the law of revenge and retribution. The law of the Sumerians, Hammurabi, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. Jesus was announcing that all his followers must be nonviolent. And at this point I am certain to get into great trouble, that every follower must be a pacifist.

More importantly, Jesus demanded a THIRD commandment at the last supper. It is seldom mentioned or scrutinized by theologians. The commandment is: “You must love one another, as I have loved you.” What does this mean? I think it means we must elevate our love to supreme heights. That, in everything we do, we must do it lovingly as Jesus did. And, again I am going to get into more difficulty here. Our love must be absolute self-sacrifice, even if it produces our death. (Remember, the martyrs) We should not search for death. However, if the unalienable human rights of our fellowman are endangered, or a severe injustice will transpire, or, some grand principle of conscience is to be desecrated, then we must protest, and if necessary unselfishly surrender our lives. “For evil to be victorious; good men need only to remain silent.” To put it another way: for our salvation to be certain, “You shall love your fellow man, more than you love yourself.” (author) Which appears to indicate by Jesus’ example, that only by insertion of our self-interest last and all others interest first, shall we achieve the quantity of spiritual love essential for salvation. My professional friends tell me, “Christianity just does not work in the real world.” I respond, “that’s the whole point.” The ethics Jesus taught us were not of this world, not the ways of man, but the ways of God. God’s way, is not man’s way. What is wisdom to man is foolishness to God. . Rather, man is commanded to transform his way of thinking, beliefs, ethics, actions and living- i.e. repent.

So, what’s the point concerning love? It is this. Without following the orders-the commandments of love, we cannot achieve salvation, and will not enter Paradise. Only a few will be saved. (Jesus Christ). In the parable of the seeds, remember, only 20 percent of the seeds fell on good spiritual soil and saved. While the remaining 80 percent of seeds, a fell on bad ground, never to bear fruit. Abandoning the faith not gaining access to Paradise. This is why Jesus warned the apostles not to clarify the parableÂ’s terrifying pessimistic meaning to the people. Jesus makes this clear: “the path which leads to perdition is wide and many travel that highway to Hell. However, the path, which leads to Paradise, is narrow. Few there are who follow it. And few there are who enter therein.”

There is no instance salvation. No religion, minister, priest, rabbi or mullah can guarantee anyone’s salvation. Salvation is up to the individual – selecting the way of love, goodness, and doing the right and just thing - no matter possible negative consequences. Any man who proclaims he is a saved is either self-deceived, misinformed, a liar or a fool. Saint Paul said, “I work out my salvation, with fear and trembling.” This is the man who was confronted by The Light - Jesus Christ Spending his entire life promoting the faith. He also stated, “If I do all the other things, but do not love, then I am lost.” For love is the greatest of all spiritual principles.


So, what is the meaning of life? I believe it is to spiritually love all others more than you love yourself. And, how could we have any potential certitude we have attained salvation love? (Once again, this observation got me in real trouble at a cocktail party with numerous clergymen.) I said, “The secret to this spiritual love which guarantees salvation is this: that in all things we think, belief, say, and especially do—we must do exactly as Jesus would do; no more, no less.” To do less is to jeopardize salvation. When we resolved to become followers of Jesus, we agreed to put off our old selves, and assume the ways - thinking of Jesus. There are no halfway commitments. There are two plans in life. One is our plan and the other is God’s Plan. Our plan does not matter. People asked me, “So your a Christian?” I respond, “No, I am not a Christian. I have never even known a Christian. I am merely a follower of Jesus. I will not know whether I am a Christian until judgment day when one of two things will transpire. The Lord will say, “Be gone from me, for I do not know you.” Or hopefully, He will say “Welcome, good and faithful servant, my good Christian, cross the threshold into Paradise, and eternally enjoy all you deserve.”

OTHER PHILOSOPHICAL STUFF

IS SELF-DECEPTIVE PERCEPTION - REALITY?

So, who am I? You are what and who you think and believe you are. For it is not necessary for most to know what the Truth is, it is what they perceive the Truth to be, which IS. (Perception is their reality) More alarming, people believe what they prefer to believe. (Julius Caesar-he never spoke any other wisdom-just killed people,) And, even worse, people prefer to believe that which matches their prejudices, hatreds, and, especially, their self-serving self-interest. That why Jesus came into this Universe. To save us. Yes, to save us from our very selves. You see, being, thinking and believing the way we humans do, entitles us guaranteed entrance into Hades. But, to transform rethink and be reborn a new butterfly-another Jesus (so to speak)-gives us a long shot chance at salvation in Paradise. All men know the future and know it is not good. Better to believe self-deceptive illusion than to face the Truth. Why Because Death lurfks waiting to steal all from Man.

THE UNWRITTEN BUT ACTUAL:

It's the unwritten law of reciprocity. What goes around comes around. What you put out there in the world, eventually will come back to you in some form or another. Whether that be good or evil.
